Baked Beans and Bath

Baked beans for breakfast. Yum! Today we're heading off for Bath and we wanted to start the day with a traditional English breakfast of eggs, sausage, ham, tomatoes and baked beans. It was pretty good. Kathy passed on the baked beans.

Ben showed up as we were finishing breakfast, and together we walked down the hill to the train station. There's a train to Bath every fifteen minutes, so we were able to hop right on. Less than a half hour later we were walking down the streets of Bath.

Bath has the only natural hot springs in England, and the Romans built a bath here to take advantage of them. Later Bath was a trendy holiday destination for the rich and famous.

Instead of going directly to the Spa, we walked down the river and up to the covered bridge.

This is the section where you can take a boat tour or go through the locks that bypass the falls.

On the bridge, they had a sweet-shop, so Kathy got some mix-and-match English treats. I ate one (maybe two...well most) of them.

Before we went to see the Spa, we sat for a few minutes in the central church, Bath Abby, while Ben waited patiently for us to get going.

The ceiling of the abby has this very ornate "fan" pattern that you can se in this picture.

At the Roman Baths, you can look down on one section for free, but touring the main bath costs 15 pounds (about $25 each). Ben had already been and suggested that it really wasn't worth it.

Instead, Ben took our picture with a Roman soldier,

and then, for 50 pence, got a full glass of the curative spa water.

Kathy was especially fond of it.

After the Baths, we walked up hill to the Great Crescent, one of England's first housing developments. (Homes in the great crescent currently cost up to 10 million pounds; we saw some for sale in a realtor's window.)

On the way, we stopped for lunch at the Crescent Cafe for a bite.

After that, it was back down the hill for the train station.

(I told Kathy that she wasn't looking suitably enthusiastic when I wanted to take her picture, so she put in a little extra effort.)

We got back to Bristol around 7 and we were still a little hungry, so Kathy and I walked around the corner to a little Thai Bistro and had a nice dinner to finish out the day.
